10/24-10/28

Welcome back from our long and restful Fall Break. I hope everyone had a wonderful time.We have many adventures we are going on this week. Wednesday is our field trip to the Botanical Gardens, Fall Fest is Thursday, and we are learning a lot of new and exciting skills.

In reading this week students will read the selection Farmer Hat. Our comprehension focus is cause and effect. We are beginning our unit on long vowels in spelling. Long vowel spelling patterns are a major focus in first grade. The first spelling pattern is the silent e. It is spelled with a consonant-vowel-consonant-silent e pattern or CVCe. This week we will begin with the long a sound. In grammar we will review nouns and students will be introduced to proper nouns. These are nouns that name a specific person, place or thing. Proper nouns are always capitalized.

In unit study we will begin our plants unit. Students will recognize plants as living things, we will experiment with plant needs, and examine the parts of a plant. The Botanic Gardens' Harvest Festival on Wednesday will provide a great being there experience.

In math this week we continue our study of shapes. We'll review plane shapes and explore congruent and symmetrical shapes. Congruent shapes are shapes that are the same size and shape. Symmetrical shapes have identical parts on either side of their center line of symmetry.
