Hello Families,

Hello Families! Students enjoyed learning about Martin Luther King, Jr. last week. Come by and check out the poems they wrote about him. His story is such an inspiration to us all.
This week in reading we'll begin our next novel study - The Flyer Flew! It's a nonfiction selection about the Wright Brothers. Our comprehension focus is problem and solution. In spelling we'll practice the ou and ow as in sound and allow. In grammar we'll finish up adjectives.

To connect with the topic in The Flyer Flew!, we'll explore force, motion, and gravity in unit study this week. We'll test how objects move, and the force of gravity on different objects. Students will be amazed at what they discover!

In math this week we'll begin a large measurement unit. We'll begin this week with measuring length. Students will determine what unit to use to measure objects. Students will choose between inches, feet, yards, as well as the metric system units - cm and m.

Hello Families,

Today we celebrated the 100th day of school! Ask your child to tell you all about it!

This week in reading the students will read A Weed is a Flower. It is a biography about George Washington Carver. The comprehension skill is cause and effect. Students will be identifying examples of cause and effect in the text. The cause is why something happened and the effect is what happened. The spelling skill is comparative endings (-er and -est).

In unit study the students will be learning about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We will read Martin's Big Words and create an acrostic poems using Martin's big words (peace, dream, love, equality, freedom).

The students will continue with fractions in math. The second graders will identify fractions of a set and solve fraction word problems by drawing pictures. We will review what we have learned about fractions on Thursday and conclude with a test Friday.

In math we are beginning fractions. We will begin with equal and unequal parts and then move into unit fractions. (Thank you for donating all those fun snacks to help us have fun with learning.)
